Plot twist: Some ‘fat loss diets’ are actually the biggest roadblocks to losing fat. When it comes to fat loss, it feels like there’s a new “magic” dietor product every other week. Scroll Instagram for even just 5 minutes and you’ll probably see influencers swearing by the latest “life-changing” plan that promises fast results if you just cut out this, eat only that, or follow some ridiculous set of rules in the name of awakening the “fat loss powers that be”. Here’s the uncomfortable truth though: not all “fat loss diets” actually support fat loss long term. And that is the kicker! In fact, some of the most hyped-up approaches and diets are actually the ones that make fat loss harder, not easier. They might have your scale initially drop it like it’s hot (snoooooopp), but at the cost of sustainability, health, and your good ol sanity. As a Dietitian, I see the fallout of these diets all the time…. Leaving in its wake, frustrated people who feel like they’ve “failed,” when in reality, the diet failed them. That’s why I want to pull back the curtain and show you three popular “fat loss” diets that are, ironically, terrible for fat loss when you zoom out and look at the bigger picture. Let class commence now! Culprit #1: Carnivore Diet Keto’s crazy cousin has been touted as the new kid on the block for fat loss prowess but honestly you are better off looking elsewhere. Why? Do you really think you will be able to sustain a diet of just meats, eggs, cheese, and assorted fats? And even if you could, you shouldn’t because the health implications can not be understated enough over the long term. Fat loss…temporarily…at what cost? Think about it. Culprit #2: Any juice cleanse or similar crappy thingCleansing yourself as if your skin, liver, lungs, and your digestive system isn’t right there doing the same thing without having to buy and drink expensive juices. You may lose weight drinking only juice cleanses or swapping out meals but how long can you stick to this really? Be real with yourself and consider the long-term progress and not just the initial fat loss any random reduction in intake can achieve. Food for thought (which ironically you will be eating less of, doing this diet). Culprit #3: OMAD…you mad? (One Meal A Day)One meal a day…sounds…”fun”. Not. Other than the lack of sustainability part of the equation here, you have 2 other things to consider.
This leaves you with both a diet that sucks and a diet that is not optimal for nutritional adequacy. Why do that? When there are better, more strategic ways to go about it. Bare minimum 2 meals a day and even that doesn’t suit alot of people. So eat with a lil bit more regularity and fuelling. Recapping It Up!So there you go! At the end of the day, these “fat loss diets” aren’t helping your fat loss (not really anyway). They’re just making it harder. Real results come from sustainable strategies and practices (which are then individualised to the person), not blanket, one-size-fits-all quick fixes. The truth is, there’s no magic hack or trendy rulebook that beats the basics done well (and done right for the individual at hand). When you get your nutrition foundations right, you can still enjoy your food, while still getting some sweet, sweet results. If you’re ready to stop spinning your wheels and start seeing real progress, that’s exactly where I can help.
