Let’s face it… The world of nutrition trends moves super zooper dooper fast. What was in the spotlight a few years ago can seem obsolete to some now but this can be for better or for worse. In the “dieting space”, there are many things I wish would go away that still remain known in 2025 but should have stayed in 2020. Specifically, there are 4 diets that you should avoid in 2025. If you’re still dabbling in any of these or have been considering it, don’t worry as you’re not alone. Now is the time to become informed. However, for your health, energy, and sanity, it might be time to consider letting these four diet trends go the way of dial-up internet. Let class commence now! 1. The Carnivore Diet — Keto’s Wild CousinThe carnivore diet took keto’s low-carb idea and ran way off the road by not just promoting minimal to zero carby goodness but literally recommending you only eat animal products. Think the likes of chicken, steak, bacon, eggs, cheese…and nothing else (hyperbolically speaking). While it would clearly sound appealing to some, this one’s missing some pretty important food groups that bring with it some pretty important nutrients. Hello fibre, antioxidants and vitamins? You there? In 2025, we know a balanced approach that includes plenty of veggies, fruits, and whole grains alongside of all the awesome protein is better for long term health and performance. If you want to dial in your protein and energy needs the right way while maintaining food freedom, chatting with a Sports Dietitian can help you find the perfect balance that fuels your life (without missing out on all the good stuff). 2. The Blood Type Diet — What’s Your Type Again? This one promised that your blood group should dictate what you eat. Type A? Go vegetarian. Type O? All meat, all day. It sounds neat and tidy but lacks any resemblance of solid scientific backing. The research just doesn’t support the idea that your blood type influences how well you digest certain foods or how your body responds to different diets. In 2025, personalised nutrition means much more than your blood type - it’s about understanding your lifestyle, goals, and health needs while tailoring in no small part to your individual context. If you’re curious about what actually works for your body, professional advice tailored to you beats any one-size-fits-all gimmick or pseudo-science dieting recommendations with no legs to stand on. 3. Juice Cleansing Diets — Liquid Love or Liver Stress?Ah yes, the ol juice cleanse - this one has been around far too long indeed. The promise of detoxing your body in just a few days with nothing but green juice and fruit smoothies… Sounds tempting, especially after a weekend of “treats,” but juice cleanses can leave you low on protein, fibre, and essential nutrients…oh and low in enjoyment of any sort. The truth? Your body has a top-notch detox system already - your liver, kidneys, and skin. So instead of starving yourself, focus on balanced meals that support overall functioning and no unnecessary aggressive dieting. If weight loss or better health is your goal, a sustainable plan (with plenty of nutrients) is way more effective - and way less hangry-inducing. 4. The Alkaline Diet — Balance Your pH, Right? The alkaline diet claims that eating certain foods can change your body's pH to make you healthier and lose weight etc and etc. But guess what? Your body’s pH is tightly regulated by organs like your lungs and kidneys, no matter what you eat. While this diet encourages eating fruits and veggies (which is great, no doubt!), it often involves cutting out entire food groups unnecessarily. For what? To be able to at best affect your urines pH? Come on now. The takeaway for 2025? Focus on whole, minimally processed foods without stressing about your body's chemistry science experiment. If you do, your stomach acid will be laughing in pH1. If you know you know. If you don’t…well. So, What Should You Do Instead? If any of these diets sound familiar (or tempting), consider this your friendly nudge to focus on what really matters:
