In recent years I have made a proactive effort to read more books in order to fuel my mind beyond just food. During this time I have read a number of books which has provided me the opportunity to discover hidden gems that can be harnessed to help provide some assists in the game of nutrition and health change. Some of these might not be “nutrition books” per se, but can be used to compliment one’s goals and help level up your nutrition game all the same. I have narrowed it down to 3 non-nutrition books that I personally recommend to clients who are dealing with a specific obstacle or want to become better at improving their lifestyle and results. In this blog, I introduce you to these 3 books and why I believe they can help you level up your food game and become a better athlete/gym goer/high performing professional. Book #1: Atomic Habits by James Clear I have personally recommended this book and used it’s teachings with clients ever since I first read this gem of a paperback. It’s in my MVP book list. The author James Clear breaks down the science and art of habit building and behaviour change in a way that is easily understandable as well as fascinating - pulling from great examples of habit change at work to connect theory with practicality. Habits are the cornerstone of diet change, health change, and lifestyle change. Therefore it is not surprising that making your habit game the MVP is a powerful way of getting bigger, better results. Want to build bigger, better, and stronger habits? Need to destroy old habits that are sabotaging you? Then this book will be your new manual. Book #2: The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest I would be lying to you if I said that the mountain theme of the book didn’t attract me to this book when I first heard about it on the grapevine. Nevertheless, I am glad I made the decision to hop on Amazon and order this powerhouse of a book to help me address some mental health and mindset issues and obstacles I have gone through over the recent years. In this book, the author Brianna Wiest, uses the metaphor of “the mountain” to represent the big challenges we face in life (particularly the ones we feel are impossible to conquer). The Mountain Is You is great at helping you deconstruct your self sabotage and then reconstruct a fresh, new, more empowering approach to life. I’ll be honest… the book will make you uncomfortable, reflective, and will make you deal with the inner work that is needed to go from self-sabotage to self-mastery (her words…and I agree). Sign #3: In-Distract-Able by Nir Eyal Honestly, I can not remember how I stumbled on this read. However, I am glad I did because it was a definite hidden gem in the self development space. Indistractable deep dives into the science of focus and it’s neverending tango with distraction. Having focus on what matters and what needs to be done is a key pillar of ensuring you play the nutrition game correctly. In this book, author Nir Eyal teaches you the hidden psychology that promotes distraction and reveals the way you can break distraction and regain your focus. I personally found this book a fascinating and insightful look into how I can become a better goal achiever by helping me deconstruct all the distractions in my life. Something I am sure sounds familiar. If you lack focus and dedication to your goals and actions…read this one and see if it helps. RecapNow that you know the 3 non-nutrition books that I recommend to help you become better with your nutrition, it is time for you to choose which one to read first. Or if you are like me and live a busy on-the-go lifestyle then definitely give audiobooks a go (I personally use Audible). However… If I were to recommend ONE book to focus on first (or if you must only choose one), then DEFINITELY go with Atomic Habits. This book is a revelation for anyone working on their nutrition and lifestyle and will ensure you address the weakness many “dieters” have…poor, inconsistent habits and mindset. So happy reading and also don’t forget to send me a message and let me know if these books end up personally helping you get more out of life.
