Choosing the right snack does not need to be daunting, confusing, or difficult. Having an idea of what type of snacks to choose can be a helpful way to optimise your fuelling. More specifically, finding high protein snacks is something that can be beneficial for many people as it helps provide balanced sustenance. This is particularly true for active individuals who may have higher needs for protein for repair and recovery. In this blog post, I show you 8 high protein snack ideas that you can literally purchase from most Australian grocery stores all ready made and ready to go (Aka no cooking/heating/chop boarding/utensiling required)! Snack #1: Chobani or Yopro High Protein Yoghurt Range High protein yoghurt is probably my number #1 go-to recommendations when it comes to protein snacks. Super versatile, delicious, and affordable. The range is growing but I find you can always grab a Chobani or Yopro yoghurt and tick off the nutrition boxes for a snack attack worthy of the best. Here is my blog comparing high protein yoghurts with coconut yoghurts if that interests you! Snack #2: John West Protein+ Tuna Range John West has been in the fish game for a very long time and in recent years they brought out the Protein+ range of re-made meals/snacks that provide a super convenient way to fuel up and increase your protein intake. While you could argue this is a meal and not a snack, I find it’s big enough and small enough to be both depending on the person and their specific needs at a time. It gets the tick of approval from me. Plus if you really want to go there…just go with a tin of just the tuna as the snack. Snack #3: John West Tuna and Beans Range The OG option when it comes to John West tuna pre-made options, the tuna and beans range is a highly recommended option because it provides benefits beyond just the protein hit. Namely the hit of nutrients and fibre it provides with the addition of beans makes this a great option to choose from. And again…if this is too main mealy for you then just choose a tin of fish by itself (that would have made the list had it not been so frickin obvious). Snack #4: Rokeby Smoothie Range Who doesn’t love a smoothie? And when it comes in a convenient lil bottle that promises a 30g protein hit each time, you can’t go wrong. If you prefer a liquid snack then this one will hit the spot and will provide the additional goodness of calcium too. So go try it out if you are a smoothie person…you won’t be disappointed. Snack #5: Woolworths Natural Cheese Sticks Say cheese…and eat your protein. Funny enough both of these can be achieved if you grab yourself a bag of the Woolworths branded Natural Cheese Sticks you see here. While there are a wide variety of cheese sticks brands and options, I find this one to resemble regular cheese the most and will have the most natural taste (I mean it’s literally in the name). Cheese is a protein powerhouse and can be a tasty, fun way for you to optimize your snack game. Snack #6: Carmens Protein Nut Bar Range While not the most quintessential protein bar out there when you consider the macros, the Carmens protein nut bar range still plays hard in this game. With at least 10g of protein per bar and the fact it tastes awesome, you really can’t go wrong as far as protein snacking goes here. So many flavours to choose from too which will suit most tastes. It truly is an affordable way to have a protein bar. Deez nuts…bars are pretty solid indeed. Snack #7: Babybel Cheese Range And we are back! With the cheese. Babybel’s have been a staple protein snack recommendation from me for years now owing to their portability, accessibility, and macro profile. Each humble Babybel round has roughly 4-5g protein and only 50ish calories so you can see how easily you can use this snack to your advantage. Just don’t eat the red part! Peeling it is part of the fun hahah. Snack #8: Up and Go Energise Range (Get) Up and Go grab yourself a pack of these tetrapak flavoured milky health drinks. Why? Because they are a super easy way to fuel yourself on the go and are the perfect protein snack in many ways. Up and Go Energise is the protein optimised version of flavoured milk with the added benefit of multiple nutrient fortification. It is a lunchbox staple for a reason but you don’t need to be a kid to enjoy it. Try it out and see why I recommend it to my athletes. RecapNow you have up to 8 new snacks you can add to your routine and mix to level up your snack fuelling game. While not all snacks need to be “high protein”, having a list of snacks you can fall upon when perhaps you ended a lil bit of protein goodness is sure to come in handy. I hope this list takes out some of the guesswork for you and simplifies the snacking process for you. Which of these snacks will you try first? Leave a comment below this blog post and let me know.
